Y2K Fashion
Y2K (Year 2000) refers to the era from late 90s to early and mid-2000s, a.k.a. the era of millennials. Gen Zs have reinvented styles of the Y2K period in their own ways.
Miu Miu’s viral micro-mini skirt is an example of such revival. The ultra-cropped pleated mini with a low-slung waist and protruding pockets was paired with a belt, ultra-cropped shirt and ultra-cropped cable-knit sweater during Miu Miu’s S/S fashion show last October. The outfit was reminiscent of Britney Spear’s outfit in her Baby One More Time music video in 1998.
Whether it’s nostalgia (for millennials) or a new discovery (for Gen Zs), what’s not to love about Y2K style? The Y2K fashion trend is associated with apparel in bright colors such as lime green, hot pink and butter yellow, as well as distinctive pieces like velour tracksuits, halter tops, baby tees, bell bottoms, baggy jeans, pleated skirts, micro-mini skirts, rectangle sunglasses, bucket hats and platform heels. The style easily makes one stand out.
Twee Fashion
According to the Oxford dictionary, “twee” means “very pretty, in a way that you find unpleasant and silly; appearing sentimental.” The twee era came right after Y2K, when hipsters switched from flamboyant fast fashion to quirky, kitsch and thrift culture. The twee aesthetic is making a strong comeback due to the recent revival of Tumblr era aesthetics on TikTok.
Jessica Day from the American sitcom New Girl (2011-2018) is the twee queen. Portrayed by Zooey Deschanel, the school teacher rocks mod styles of the 1960s and 70s. Costume designer Debra McGuire has explained to various media outlets that the character’s wardrobe was partly inspired by Deschanel herself. Another twee icon is British model Alexa Chung.
The twee fashion trend is characterized by quaint separates such as oversized blazers, skirt suits, grandpa cardigans, opaque tights, patterned tights, blouses, A-line shift dresses and high-waist shorts, as well as details and accessories like Peter Pan collars, polka dots, nautical stripes, ballet flats, wool berets, hair bows and headbands. Overall, the look channels cutesy indie vibes that resonate with teens.
Hyper Feminine
We’re living in a time of gender fluidity. Androgynous wear for women has been around for a long time, and now the ultra-feminine aesthetic is back in vogue!
When singer-songwriter Billie Eilish appeared in a pin-up-style photo shoot for the British edition of Vogue in June 2021, she set an IG record by getting one million likes in six minutes for the cover photo. While the look is a departure from Eilish’s baggy and androgynous style, the 19-year-old explained that she just wanted to embrace femininity and explore that side of herself.
This year, Rihanna has made headlines with her sexy and baby bump-revealing maternity looks, including a super sheer nightgown for Dior’s A/W 22 show at Paris Fashion Week. The singer’s rebellious hyper-feminine looks subvert traditional expectations of maternity fashion and empower women to celebrate their personal styles.
Embrace clothing featuring ruffles, feathers, sheer fabric, mesh, lace, crochet, fringes, sequins and shimmer. Go for babydoll dresses, knits, dramatic drapes and corsets for dreamy, romantic and sexy looks.
Resort Wear
Strictly speaking, resort wear isn’t a trend, but a clothing category for which the aesthetic evolves from time to time. Some of us may not be able to travel abroad at the moment, but we can at least dress like we’re on holiday. Resort to straw hats, tunics, kaftans, beach dresses, maxi dresses, beach cover-ups, Bermuda shorts, embellished sandals, wedged flip-flops, tie-dye clothing, bikinis and big shoulder bags for sartorial getaway-inspired looks.
